In an integrated energy system, innovative renewable gas technologies are becoming increasingly important. While some innovative renewable gas technologies are in demonstration phase, others have already become commercial in recent years. The recast of the Renewable Energy Directive (RED2) recognizes these developments and includes new terms and definitions, such as recycled carbon fuels and gaseous renewable fuels of non-biological origin. In order to count these innovative renewable fuels towards the EU Member States RED2 goals, requirements such as sustainability, renewability of source, mass balancing, no double counting and no overcompensation must be met.
With regard to cross-sectoral technologies, a proper documentation and exchange of information is needed between sectors and documentation systems. The EU funded REGATRACE project aims at developing guidelines for the verification and documentation of renewable gas technologies like Power-to-Methane (PtG), Liquified Biogas (Bio-LNG) and Methanol (from recycled carbon and biomass), which can be applied and implemented by national issuing bod-ies, certification schemes and regulators.
In this respect, the German Energy Agency (dena) is organizing an expert workshop on October 22nd, 2019 in Berlin.
We kindly invite you to join us in this exciting discussion. Among the topics we will be covering during the workshop are the following:

  • What verification could be appropriate for cross-sectoral renewable gas technologies to meet RED2 definitions and requirements?
  • How can the documentation between different documentation systems be organized? What additional in-formation is required? Which elements must be considered for this purpose?
  • Which kind of information could serve as a proof for RED2 requirements? How could it be verified?
