Discussions about the future of the toll exemption and German draft legislation to implement the European Renewable Energy Directive RED II are weighing on the future prospects for LNG in heavy-duty transport. Thus, the previous drafts from the Federal Environment Ministry for the implementation of RED II into German law are not very helpful for the development of a bio-LNG market. They generally do not take biogas sufficiently into account, as various biogas associations criticize. The present for LNG in heavy-duty transport, however, looks good, according to Zukunft Erdgas. In 2020, just over 30,000 tons of LNG had been sold through September (about 400 GWh). By the end of the year, the industry initiative expects sales to reach about 47,000 tons. This would be an increase of 220 percent compared to 2019.
